Our Work

Care Hubs and Community Food Access

Assata’s House experiments with ways to make care and healing accessible in daily life. We build spaces where Black women, Black families, and BIPOC communities can find support, nourishment, and moments of rest. By centering cultural memory and ancestral wisdom, we help communities reclaim practices that sustain, restore, and allow people to thrive.

Two core initiatives anchor this work

Tending Our Gardens, supporting postpartum families through nourishment and holistic care, and the Care Hub Initiative that provides embodied care, rest, and wellness services to the broader community.

Nourishment in Practice

Supported by Reinvestment Fund

Tending Our Gardens offers culturally grounded postpartum care for Black and Brown families prioritizing, but not limited to West Philadelphia. Centered on nourishment, rest, and community care, we support new parents through a tender and transformative time with resources that honor their bodies, traditions, and transitions.

Offerings

  • Weekly fresh produce deliveries that help nourish healing bodies

  • Group wellness sessions, ceremonies, and community spaces

  • On-your-own-time workshops on postpartum care, herbal support, and grounding practices

Tending Our Gardens helps build a circle of support where families feel held through nourishment, learning, and community connection. Over 26 weeks, we supported postpartum families with weekly shares of fresh vegetables, fruits, and tofu or eggs, helping strengthen whole-family healing and recovery.

The Care Hub Initiative

Supported by the Barra Foundation, these clinics offer spaces for Black and BIPOC communities to rest, restore balance, and connect with care and each other. Participants can receive bodywork, movement support, and other wellness offerings in a welcoming, community-centered environment.

Purpose
The Care Hub Initiative offers gentle spaces for rest, embodied care, and collective restoration. These gatherings provide direct services such as acupuncture, restorative bodywork, somatic practices, and shared meals, giving attendees a chance to slow down, recharge, and reconnect.

Audience
Open to Black women, BIPOC queer folks, caregivers, and Philadelphia community members seeking grounding, embodied healing, and culturally rooted care.

Offerings

  • Quarterly Care Clinics with drop-in bodywork like Reiki, massage, and acupuncture

  • Movement practices

  • Monthly community sessions

The Care Hubs honor traditions of mutual aid and communal healing, creating spaces where care is shared and received.

Herbs, teach-ins, skill shares, and more

Our Care Hubs create opportunities to slow down, connect, and be fully present. Guests can explore new practices and engage in meaningful conversations. These gatherings foster a sense of belonging and offer gentle support for navigating everyday life.

Why We Care

Caregivers, especially Black mamas and birthing people, carry immense responsibility often without the support they deserve. Our Care Hubs are designed to address this gap, weaving together practices, guidance, and connection to provide nourishment and restoration. Through these gatherings, we honor the labor of care and create pathways toward sustained well-being.

What We Offer

Each Care Hub blends a variety of healing modalities, including yoga, herbalism, Reiki, massage, and community acupuncture. Sliding-scale services ensure accessibility, while skill shares and workshops offer practical tools for daily life. Together, these offerings create a vibrant, supportive environment where caregivers and families can learn, rest, and reconnect with themselves and their communities.
